Chris Eubank Jr. stops overmatched Tony Jeter in two

It was never going to be a tough Matchroom Boxing debut for Chris Eubank Jr. and American Tony Jeter succumbing to a second-round stoppage in a middleweight bout scheduled for 12 was more or less what was expected in Sheffield, England, tonight.

Eubank Jr., rated No. 9 by THE RING at 160 pounds, landed a booming right hand in the opening round and then floored the overmatched Jeter with a swift left hook. In the second he was looking for the finish and referee Howard Foster called a halt to the action when Jeter, pinned against the ropes, absorbed an accurate combination to head and body.

The official time was 0:29.

Known as “The New Generation”, Eubank Jr. certainly has the boxing world talking. Just this week, the Englishman announced his plans to unseat IBF and WBA titleholder Gennady Golovkin and although his comments were met with derision from fans, this stereotypical bluster only added to a well-oiled hype machine.

Cocky, self-absorbed, boisterous? Unquestionably but, make no mistake, the 26-year-old son of former two-weight world titleholder Chris Eubank can also fight and he has the capacity to improve under new coach Adam Booth.

Eubank Jr. (20-1, 15 knockouts) is already scheduled to face Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan on Dec. 12 in an eagerly anticipated domestic encounter that is dripping with bad blood. The pair will collide in London on the Anthony Joshua-Dillian Whyte undercard.

“O’Sullivan has been talking a lot of mess,” said Eubank Jr. when interviewed by Sky Sports in the U.K. “I’m coming for him and it’s time for some punishment.”

Englishman Gavin McDonnell successfully defended his European junior featherweight title against Jeremy Parodi by posting a 12-round unanimous decision. The official scores were 118-110 and 117-111 twice.

McDonnell, younger brother of THE RING No. 4 rated bantamweight Jamie, boxed off the target for most of the fight, spearing home an accurate left jab while mixing in an effective body attack. Adept head movement prevented Parodi from landing upstairs and when the game Frenchman did manage to close the gap, he was tied up and marched backwards.

Chris Eubank Jr enjoyed a second round stoppage victory over Tony Jeter in Sheffield on Saturday night to defend his WBA interim middleweight title.

Eubank Jr grounded his opponent in the opening round with a big left hook, before referee Howard Foster was forced to stop the bout early in the second as Jeter took punishment on the ropes.

Following the bout, promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed the WBA had made Eubank Jr's next bout against Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan on December 12 the final eliminator to face the victor of Peter Quillin-Daniel Jacobs.

"Credit to the fighter - he came to a foreign country and fought in front of a crowd who was against him," Eubank Jr told Sky Sports after his victory. "This was a warm-up fight. I got off some ring-rust and I'm getting ready for December 12 against a guy called Spike O'Sullivan.

"I'm ready for Spike O'Sullivan. He's been talking a lot of mess and it's time for some punishment. Please back up these words because I'm going to be going in there like an animal and I hope you're ready for it.

"Everything's been working smoothly. There's been no clash. It has been smooth in the changing room and as you guys saw, it was smooth up on there on the big stage. This is a taste of things to come."

Victory at the Sheffield Arena improved Eubank Jr's professional record to 20 victories (15 Kos) and one defeat.
