Sergey Kovalev punishes Jean Pascal with easy seventh-round TKO in title-fight rematch

MONTREAL — It was billed as a revenge fight for Jean Pascal, who was beat down over eight rounds by Sergey Kovalev during their March 2015 meeting. There would be no vengeance, though, as Kovalev picked up where things left off almost one year ago, as if the bell rang for Round 9.

Kovalev (29-0-1, 26 KOs) dished out a frightful beating to Pascal on Saturday before 9,866 at Bell Centre to retain his unified light heavyweight championship via seventh-round stoppage and continue toward a fall summit meeting with Andre Ward, who was ringside to scout his future foe in the HBO main event.

Former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal didn’t seem to have it Saturday night as unified champion Sergey Kovalev won a seventh-round technical knockout against a badly overmatched Pascal at a disappointed Bell Centre in Pascal’s hometown of Montreal.  Pascal fell to 30-4-1, 17 KOs while Kovalev remained undefeated and raised his record to 29-0-1, 26 KOs.
