Baltimore's Gervonta Davis landed a furious series of power punches to stop Jose Pedraza in the seventh round and win the IBF junior lightweight title on Saturday night in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Davis delivered a flashy, star-making performance in just the 17th fight of his undefeated career. He dominated the first three rounds against the previously undefeated Pedraza and badly hurt the champion with a body shot in the sixth round.

He pressed his advantage from there, hammering Pedraza throughout the seventh round to secure his 16th knockout in 17 career victories.

Gervonta Davis stops Jose Pedraza in seven, wins IBF 130-lb. title

Gervonta Davis lifted the IBF 130-pound title from Jose Pedraza in impressive fashion, halting the previously unbeaten beltholder in seven rounds, on the James DeGale-Badou Jack undercard on Saturday in Brooklyn, New York.

Davis (17-0, 16 knockouts), a 22-year-old southpaw from Baltimore, was able to land his accurate power shots seemingly at will, in part due to his composure and underrated skills, but also due to the questionable tactics of Pedraza (23-1, 13 KOs), who took the fight directly to the explosive young puncher and absorbed a lot of punishment during the first four rounds.

The 27-year-old Puerto Rican sometimes stood in front of Davis behind a high guard and did not bother to punch back.

Gervonta "Tank" Davis Runs Over Jose Pedraza to Win IBF Title

Christopher Nicastro - roundbyroundboxing.com

In what could easily qualify for Knockout of the Mid-year and Fight of the Mid-year come June, Gervonta “Tank” Davis stripped Jose Pedraza of his 130-pound IBF belt in a blistering fight that ended with Pedraza’s butt on the canvas in the seventh round. Davis took the early rounds as it seemed Pedraza was trying to wear him down with counters from a distance. Being down a couple rounds come the fifth, Pedraza came out from his corner smoking, trying to put enough pressure on his man to break him down in the trenches. As the fight picked up speed, Davis and Pedraza traded verbal jabs–Pedraza began to let off chants of “WOO!” as he landed to Davis’ body repeatedly, slowing him down and looking as though he was going to take control going deeper into the fight.
