IBF super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis wasted little time hitting the road as he went to England for the first defense of his title.

And once he got there, he wasted even less time dispatching his challenger, stopping Liam Walsh with an emphatic third-round TKO to remain undefeated at 18-0 with 17 KOs. The loss was the first of Walsh's career.

Davis' first title defense was the opening bout on Showtime's split-site card, which also included three televised fights at the MGM National Harbor in suburban Washington D.C.

Davis, who hails from Baltimore, said, “Tonight we were in the groove. I think he was hurt pretty bad. The ref did his job and it was just a matter of time.  I used my boxing IQ tonight and picked my shots, and when I picked my shots I got him out of there.

Gervonta Davis stops Liam Walsh in third round to retain IBF world super featherweight crown

Davis justified the hype from mentor Floyd Mayweather to put on a fine display in London

Gervonta Davis produced a sensational display to stop Liam Walsh in the third round and retain his IBF World super featherweight title to further justify the hype from his mentor Floyd Mayweather as a future superstar.

Walsh bemoaned the stoppage, insisting it was premature but Davis imposed his sheer force from the first bell.

‘The Tank’ began by pushing a jab down to Walsh’s body and followed it up with a series of powerful combinations.

The Brit came out in the second with more purpose though, showing plenty of looks in a change of stance to orthodox, pumping out a jab.

Davis brilliantly spun Walsh late in the round though and landed another powerful left.

Gervonta Davis stops Liam Walsh in three rounds

Unbeaten American Gervonta Davis arrived on U.K. soil with heavy backup in the form of future Hall-of-Famer, and promoter, Floyd Mayweather Jr. but the 22-year-old boxer-puncher from Baltimore, Maryland, took care of business all by himself on Saturday.

Davis, a rapid and hard-hitting southpaw, retained his IBF junior lightweight title with a third-round stoppage of Liam Walsh at the Copper Box Arena in London, England, and sent a chilling message to his contemporaries at 130 pounds. The official time was 2:11 and this was an electric display.

A succession of left hands had Walsh ready to be taken in the third and the challenger finally went down from a crushing blow to the side of the head. He rose on unsteady legs and despite some of the follow-up assault cutting holes through the air, Walsh was justifiably rescued by referee Michael Alexander while absorbing punishment against the ropes.

The IBF super-featherweight champion looked stunning in a complete destruction of the Cromer puncher.

Davis, promoted by Floyd Mayweather Jnr, has been touted as the next superstar in boxing.

And he looked the part here in the first defence of the title he won earlier this year.

Walsh had earned his shot against Davis, but he was just not on the same level as the American.

Mayweather protégé Gervonta Davis outclasses Liam Walsh

LONDON -- Gervonta Davis showed why he is being tipped to be a future superstar after bludgeoning Liam Walsh to a third-round defeat in a first world title defence on Saturday.

The American produced another spectacular stoppage that met the approval of his conspicuous promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr, who put in an energetic performance himself as a ringside observer at the Copper Box Arena in east London.

There had been some verbals at a press conference earlier in the week and Davis seemed to treat Walsh with disdain when he exploded into action in the third round, dropping the Briton for a count before then following up and forcing the stoppage.
