29/12/2013 - 19.40.10

IBF pays tribute to former boxer, coach, official and much more Paul Barry

Sadly during this festive time of year for so many of us I have to inform you of the passing of one our members, Paul Barry of Massachusetts. Paul was a member of the IBF/USBA for many years and was also a major local figure in the sport of boxing in the Worcester, Massachusetts area. He started as an amateur boxer in 1963 and trained at Vic Catrone's gym in Worcester. He was a professional boxer under the name Paul Barrett from 1967 to 1969. Paul later owned his own boxing gym in Worcester and coached many young boxers. He served as a pro boxing official for more than 30 years. He was a proud member of Ring 4 Boston and USA Boxing of New England for over 30 years. He was Vice President of USA Boxing New England in 2009.

Calling hours are Sunday, December 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, MA. The funeral will be Monday, December 30 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, 931 Main St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support the boxing team at the Worcester Boys & Girls Club, 65Tainter St., Worcester 01610. At this point in time I do not have any family contacts, but if you would like to send a message to the family I will do my best to see that they receive it.
