All Change For Martin - Mayall Out, Mooney In For April 26th Title Fight

By Gianluca (Rio) Di Caro

London – Tuesday, 22nd April 2014
Tommy’s manager, Johnny Eames, was straight on the case and before Tommy had even finished his training session with coach Barry Smith, a new opponent had been secured.

As such Tommy will now face Worcester’s Michael Mooney, for the British Masters Welterweight Bronze title, on the TRAD TKO Events promoted ALL GUNS BLAZING event, which will take place at the Troxy in Limehouse, London on Saturday 26th April 2014.

Following his aforementioned training session young Tommy took a few minutes to talk about the change of opponent as well as his career to date.

“Wasn’t expecting this, but I’m OK with it, I just want to get in there and fight.

Don’t know too much about Michael Mooney, other that he is a very game kid that will come to fight.

I know every boxer likes to know well in advance who they are fighting, which is preferable, but I’m not one of those that sits on a computer and study the opponent for weeks on end, this is ten rounds, or less, I can work it all out before then.

I’m more than happy with the 7-0 and it’s not been an easy 7-0 as well, I’ve done it the hard way.

I had a busy first year as a pro, 6-0 and was boxing quite regularly, have boxed away from home a lot and had tough opponents, game opponents but we’ve got a few knockouts along the way.

To open up on such a brilliant show this year, as the Peterborough show was, was brilliant and I honestly believe that Johnny see that I had become a man overnight on that performance and I think that’s why I have got this title shot.

On paper my last fight was a real tough challenge, but in the ring I honestly felt it was a lot easier for me than anyone expected.

Even I didn’t expect to win by a six round shut out, I mean I beat him every round, beat him to the jab, beat him with lovely uppercuts as he was walking in.

Because of the way I handled that fight I suppose that’s why Johnny (manager Johnny Eames) decided it was time for my first title fight.

I have only just turned twenty, now I’m in my twenties I’m slowly starting to get my man strength, like people have been saying to me ‘are you ready to step up yet’ but skills pay the bills and it’s been proven in sparring.

Being down at the TRAD TKO I’ve come on leaps and bounds, training wise, and it shows on the night, I’m taking it from the gym to the ring.

I know I normally sell the place out anyway on six rounders, but to be the headliner is just phenomenal and can’t thank my fans enough for getting me in that situation.

I also want to say a big thank you to Junction 17 Cars, without them I wouldn’t have been able to stay down in London and train as a full time professional,

everyone should be able to, but only few can afford to.

It gives me an advantage, without them supporting me I wouldn’t be progressing how I am, and if the fans didn’t get behind me like they do, by selling out all these shows, I wouldn’t be top of the bill now.

I’m looking forward to Saturday and fighting for the first time at the Troxy, I’m used to fighting at a sold out York Hall, which is twelve hundred people, but on Saturday it’ll be eighteen hundred so it’ll be even more atmospheric than usual, that doesn’t bother me at all, as soon as I get inside those ropes I’m at home.

Once again I want to say a massive thank you to my fans, who are turning out in force once again, I just can’t thank them enough for their support.”
