EURO RESULTS

By  Per-Ake Persson

Feb 21, Berlin, GER, O2 Arena, Sauerland Event
Arthur Abraham, 76,1, Ger W12-U Paul Smith, 75,1, UK
Abraham retained the WBO title with a clear win over Smith. The rematch was based on the wide decision in Abraham´s favour the first time around in what was a close - and deserved - win for King Arthur.

This time Abraham dominated the fight while Smith fought as if he knew he was second best and allowed the champion to dictate the pace. There were no knockdowns but Smith showed a good chin as he got nailed a numbe of times. Abraham is probably over the hill but knows what to do and when to do it and came out a clear winner. It was scored 117-111 twice and 116-112. I also had it 117-111. Smith´s only good rounds came when Abraham allowed him to be on top.
Mirco Ricci, 79,1, Ita W12-U Enrico Kölling, 78,9, Ger
Kölling, strangely lethargic and hampered by a bad cut by the right eye, let Ricci, a relatively limited boxer stick and move fighter with no power, steal the fight from him and win the WBA I/C title. During the fight there where lots of brawling among the English fans so not many watched what went down in the ring (and that includes me). By the ninth Kölling was bleeding badly from a cut over the right eye and Ricci did well. In the final round Kölling was hurt by a left hook and was in trouble in the final minute. It was scored 116-112 twice and 117-111.
10x3: David Price, 114,75, UK TKO 6 (3.00) Irineu Beato Costa Junior, 119,5, Bra
Price fought a careful, skillful, wellpaced fight and could probably have ended this sooner but took his time. Costa went down from a left hook and two more knockdowns followed and it was stopped at the bell ending the round. Price is good, real good in fact, but does he have the confidence and toughness needed at top level?
6x3: Burak Sahin, 105,5, Berlin, Ger KO 3 (1.09 Maksym Pediura, 107,0, Ukr
Pediura was shaken in the second and never recovered as his punch resistance appears to be gone. After a knockdown in the third Pediura clutched his eye and was soon on the floor again and was counted out as he got up.
Stefan Härtel, 76,2, Ger W6-U Baptiste Castegnaro, 75,5, Fra
Castegnaro slipped / got knocked down in the second, held and punched and kept trying but Härtel was too good for him. 60-54 twice and 59-54.
8x3: Josh Warrington, 58,0, Uk TKO 5 (1.51) Edwin Tellez, 56,0, Nic
The towel came in during the fifth to save Tellez from further punishment. Tellez did his best but was out of his league and took a beating in every round.
Noel Gevor, 90,8, Ger W8-U Alejandro Emilio Velez, 90,8, Arg
Tough, good fight where Velez, flabby looking but strong, took the fight to Gevor and forced him to fight on the inside. It looked like he would wear down Gevor but Noel was too good a boxer. A left hook to the body after Velez had slipped on the ring commercial took a lot of steam out of the Argentinian and he was under pressure in the last round. It was scored 78-74 on all cards.

Gennadyi Golovkin, 159,, Kaz/Ger TKO 11 (0.50) Martin Murray, 159,75, Uk
Golovkin retained the WBA supertitle, won the WBC Interim belt and retained the IBO title. I saw part of this fight and it looked as if Golovkin would land the finisher at any time. Murray was down twice in the fourth and once in the tenth.

Haskins won the vacant EBU title on scores of 78-74 twice and 79-73.
