Brett William Smith Takes PABA Title
In the latest installment of Fox Sports Friday Night Fights, Ryan Waters of Left Hook Promotions put on a 5 card professional show last night 26th August, 2011 at the Cronulla Leagues Club.
Main Event-Robert Whaley vs Brett William Smith
Australian Lightweight champion, Brett William Smith, son of Michael Katsidis’ manager has defeated defending PABA Light-Welterweight champion Robert Whaley overnight in their Friday Night Fights bout in Cronulla.
Whaley was forced to vacate his title on the scales after he was 300 grams overweight and was unable to lose it. If Whaley won the title would have been vacated and as he lost Brett W. Smith is ruled the belt holder.
The fight was marred with cuts and head clashes with both fighters cut very early on in the fight, both ruled accidental head clashes. Brett W.Smith had the worse of the cuts which was checked a few times by the ringside doctor before being ruled no good at 1:15 in round 6.
The pair put on an exciting and aggressive 6 rounds of boxing which would have been a close decision had it gone to the judges after 12 rounds.
All 3 judges scored it (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) to Brett William Smith who improves his record to (11-1-1) and is now the current PABA Light-Welterweight and Australian Lightweight champion.
Adrian Campbell vs Jason Kanofski
Both fighters sustained cuts in the early of the stages of the fight but their cut men were able to make sure that they didn’t play a role in the result of the fight.Both fighters kept busy throughout the fight.
Former QLD Welterweight champion, Jason Kanofski took the win via the judges scorecards (78-74, 80-72, 79-74). He improves his record to (15-7-3).
On the undercard:
Daniel Jones vs Michael Hynard
Daniel Jones looked very impressive in his pro debut against Michael Hynard. Hynard looked in trouble from the outset getting caught with his hands down. Jones tagged Hynard within the last 10 seconds of round 1 before Jones dropped him with a good straight hand which Hynard was unable to get up from. Jones won by KO 2:59 in round 1.
Ben Kahunez vs Steve Psaras Jr
Kickboxer, Steve Psaras Jr and Ben Kahunez making his debut fought a well deserved split decision draw (40-37, 39, 39, 40-36) at Super-Middleweight. The pair traded big shots early with much of the fight being evem. Psaras dominated the fight from centre ring but Kahunez was able to overcome this to play out the draw.
Walter Papu’a vs David Aloua
David Aloua put in a strong performance against Walter Pupu'a to record his 3rd KO win from 3 starts. Papu’a was given a standing 8 count with a minute left in round 1 before the ref waved the fight away 2:24 into round 1. With Tony Mundine in David’s corner the ACT based fighter did a job on Papu’a from Tonga.
