FORMER WBO HEAVYWEIGHT TOMMY MORRISON DIES AT 44

Ex-heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison dies at 44

Dave Skretta, Associated Press

Tommy Morrison's career reached its pinnacle on a hot June night in Las Vegas, when he stepped into the ring and beat George Foreman to become heavyweight champion.
It reached its nadir when he tested positive for HIV three years later.
The last 20 years of the brash boxer's life would be defined by extensive legal troubles, erratic behavior and mounting health problems. Morrison would later claim that he never tested positive for the virus that causes AIDs, even as he was hospitalized during the last days of his life.
Morrison died Sunday night at a Nebraska hospital. He was 44.
His longtime promoter and close friend, Tony Holden, confirmed that "the Duke" had died, but his family would not disclose the cause of death. Morrison and his wife, Trisha, continued to deny that the former champion ever had HIV during the final years of his life.

"Tommy's a very stubborn person and he views things the way he wants to view things. That's his right and privilege," Holden said. "All through his career, him and I would come not to physical blows but disagreements on certain things. We always ended up friends. That was Tommy.
"That's the way Tommy took off after he was told he was HIV-positive," Holden added. "When he first was told, I was taking him to seek treatment and to different doctors around the country. And then he started research on the Internet and started saying it was a conspiracy. He went in that direction and never looked back."
The controversy, along with Morrison's rapid decline, overshadowed a stellar career.
Morrison was a prodigious puncher whose bid to fight in the 1988 Seoul Olympics ended at the hands of Ray Mercer, who later dealt him his first professional loss. Along the way, Morrison became such a recognizable face that he was cast in Rocky V alongside Sylvester Stallone.
Morrison won his first 28 professional fights, beating faded champions such as Pinklon Thomas along the way. He hit it big at the Thomas & Mack Center in the summer of 1993 — a unanimous decision over Foreman, then in the midst of his comeback — to claim a vacant world title.
When he was released, Morrison said his HIV tests were in fact false positives, and he wanted to resume his career. He passed medical tests in Arizona — even as Nevada stood by its decision to suspend his license — and returned to the ring. Morrison fought twice more in his career, winning once in West Virginia and for the final time in Mexico. He finished with a record of 48-3-1 with 42 knockouts.
Morrison started to fade from the public eye in the final years of his life. He tried to stay connected to the sport by opening a gym in Wichita, Kan., but the enterprise was short-lived.
"If Tommy was fighting today, he no doubt would be a world champion," Holden said. "You have to look at who he was fighting in the '90s, the guys in that division were Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Ray Mercer, George Foreman. There's no one with that talent today. Tommy would absolutely dominate if he were in his prime boxing today."

Tommy Morrison dies at 44

By Elizabeth Merrill  |  ESPN.com

Former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison died in an Omaha, Neb., hospital late Sunday night. He was 44.
Morrison's longtime promoter, Tony Holden, said Morrison died at 11:50 p.m. with his wife, Trisha, beside him.
Morrison tested positive for HIV in 1996 before a fight with Arthur Weathers, effectively ending his boxing career. In the years that followed, he denied having HIV and also challenged the existence of the virus.
Trisha Morrison, who married Morrison in 2011, picked up that fight, and in a recent interview with ESPN.com insisted that Morrison had Guillain-Barre Syndrome, not HIV.
Holden declined to comment Monday on the cause of Morrison's death.
"I don't know what the official cause of death at the hospital will be," he said.
"You prepare for things like this, and still you feel like you got hit by a truck when you hear the news."
In 1993, Morrison beat George Foreman to win the WBO heavyweight title, only to lose it to unheralded Michael Bentt in a defeat that scuttled a showdown with Lennox Lewis. Morrison would fight Lewis in 1995, getting knocked out in the sixth round in Atlantic City, N.J.
Morrison won his first 28 professional fights, beating faded champions such as Pinklon Thomas along the way. His career reached its apex in the summer of 1993 with the unanimous decision over Foreman, then in the midst of a comeback, to claim a vacant title.
Morrison's license was quickly suspended in 1996 by Nevada after his positive HIV test, and the ban was, in effect, upheld by every other sanctioning body. Morrison said at a news conference he'd never fight again, blaming his plight on a "permissive, fast and reckless lifestyle.''
His lifestyle never changed, though, even when he stepped away from the ring.
He had already run afoul of the law in 1993, when he pleaded guilty to assaulting a college student. He also dealt with weapons charges and multiple DUI incidents over the years. He was sentenced to two years in prison in 2000, and another year was added to his sentence in 2002 for violating parole.
When he was released, Morrison said his HIV tests had resulted in false positives, and he wanted to resume his career. He passed medical tests in Arizona -- even as Nevada stood by its decision -- and returned to the ring. Morrison fought twice more in his career, winning once in West Virginia and for the final time in Mexico. He finished with a record of 48-3-1 with 42 knockouts.
He also gained fame for his role in the 1990 movie "Rocky V," in which he portrayed Tommy Gunn, a rookie boxer who is trained by Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). Gunn goes on to win the heavyweight title and then later fights and loses to his mentor.
Morrison was born in Arkansas and grew up in Oklahoma.

The hard-punching heavyweight saw his career crumble in 1996 when he tested positive for HIV, a result he challenged later in life while attempting a comeback. Not only did Morrison deny that he had HIV, but he also questioned whether the disease existed and blamed the positive tests on the work of a rival promoter.

Tommy Morrison, the hard-punching heavyweight with boy-band good looks who once beat George Foreman and starred in the Rocky franchise before falling ill in recent years — all the while denying he was HIV positive — died on Sunday at a hospital in Nebraska. Morrison, who was nicknamed "The Duke," was 44.
Morrison's death was confirmed by his wife, Trisha to the mixed martial arts website, "MMA Dirty," which reported he died of "respiratory and metabolic acidosis and multiple organ failure." His death was also confirmed by Morrison's long-time promoter, Tony Holden to the Associated Press.

Morrison had been bed-ridden for a year, with what his mother, Diana Morrison, told ESPN.com was "full-blown AIDS" in a story last month. However, Morrison denied that charge, even after testing positive for HIV before a fight in 1996. Morrison would go on to fight three more times, winning those fights, before retiring in 2008 before waging a very public health battle for his life.

Wildly popular because of his good looks and punching power, in 1989, one of his fans included Sylvester Stallone, who later cast him in the role of "Tommy Gunn" for the fifth installment of the "Rocky" series. Morrison got his nickname based on a claim that he's the grandnephew of the former Hollywood star, John Wayne, and he rode that aura to fame, fortune and ultimately legal and health troubles throughout a roller-coaster of a career.

Morrison got his start participating in tough-man contests at the age of 13, providing a fake-ID to allow him to compete. He later boxed as an amateur, garnering some local success before he lost a narrow decision to Ray Mercer in the Olympic trials. Morrison, with his two-fisted power, quickly made a name for himself in the professional ranks, running his record to 28-0 with 23 knockouts by the time he was 22. In one of the more hyped fights of 1991, Morrison faced Mercer again as a professional in a battle of undefeated fighters. After getting off to fast start, Morrison suffered the first loss of his career, losing by a fifth-round stoppage as Mercer battered him into the ropes.

Former boxing champion Tommy Morrison dead at 44

By BILL HAISTEN  World Sports Writer

Tommy Morrison, who hailed from Jay, scored a prominent role in the “Rocky V” movie with Sylvester Stallone and soared to the top of the world heavyweight boxing ranks in 1993, died on Sunday night at 44 in Omaha, Neb., his former promoter Tony Holden has confirmed.
“It’s true,” said Holden, who resides in Tulsa. “He was with his wife, Trisha, when he passed.”
The cause of death has not been reported by any member of Morrison’s family or Nebraska authorities.
In February 1996, before he was scheduled to fight in Las Vegas, Morrison was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission after having tested positive for HIV. Three days later, during an internationally televised news conference conducted at the Marriott Tulsa Hotel Southern Hills, Morrison said that an additional blood test also revealed that he carried HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Later, Morrison vehemently denied that he was HIV-positive. In a 1998 ESPN Magazine piece, he was quoted as having said: “HIV's never been proven to cause AIDS. HIV ain't ever killed anybody.”
Unable to obtain a boxing license in any state that has a boxing commission, he fought as recently as 2008 in Mexico.
In a recent ESPN.com update on Morrison’s health, a family member reported that Morrison had been sustained during the last several months by a feeding tube and ventilator.
“They say heroes never die,” Jeremy Black of Jay said on Monday, “so we must keep them in our hearts and never forget why they were so much to us.”
Jay resident Jerri Hudson-Lane said, “I have known Tom since he was young, and my heart is broken over the loss of such a funny, kind and strong man.”
During Morrison’s senior year at Jay High School, Carol Round was his English teacher.
“He was an intelligent young man, earning good grades,” said Round, now retired and residing in Claremore. “He was also a member of BETA Club, an organization based on serving others. To be invited, a student must have had a B-plus average or better.”
One of the club’s projects was to adopt a resident at a local nursing home, she said.
“While we had set a limit of $10 per person toward a Christmas gift, Tommy and another student spent three times that amount, purchasing a pair of nice leather house shoes for the man they had adopted,” Round said. “I was impressed by their generosity.”
A knockout artist renowned for his devastating left hook, Morrison’s record in the ring was 48-3-1. He fought professionally seven times in Oklahoma – twice at Tulsa’s Brady Theater, once at Tulsa’s Expo Square Pavilion, once at the Tulsa Convention Center, twice in Oklahoma City and once in Muskogee.
“From a boxing fan perspective, he was a great fighter to watch,” said Clint Drake of Grove. “He was aggressive from the ring of the first bell and never let up until the fight was over.
“Tommy Morison's ring style should be a life lesson to us all. Never give up. Even if he were losing, he would fight to the bitter end. He won quite a few fights off of sheer determination.”
In a 1992, ABC-televised bout against Joe Hipp at Reno, Nev., Morrison sustained a broken jaw, a sprained right hand and a gash above his eye that later would require 20 stitches to close. Morrison prevailed in a ninth-round knockout.
In June 1993, Morrison prevailed in a 12-round decision over George Foreman, capturing the World Boxing Organization title in Las Vegas.
On Oct. 29, 1993, in an HBO-televised championship bout witnessed live by a Tulsa Convention Center crowd of 7,800, Morrison defended his title against Michael Bentt, a little-known New Yorker. After wearing a Tulsa Oilers jersey and Jay Bulldogs cap into the ring, Morrison was dealt a first-round knockout defeat.
Morrison was an Arkansas native whose family moved to northeast Oklahoma. He played football at Jay High School. As a teen, Morrison got his start in the fight game by competing in Toughman contests.
“I remember the day I met him in person (at a restaurant bar),” recalled Mark Limes, an Olathe, Kan., resident and a native of Grove. “It wasn't too long before his fight against George Foreman. He had come in with his groupies.
“I went up to him and introduced myself and then I said, 'Grove can beat Jay any day of the week in football – even in their sleep.' You should have seen the look in his face. It was classic.”
Claiming to have been distantly related to actor John Wayne, Morrison was nicknamed “The Duke.”
During the process of casting his “Rocky V” film, Stallone watched a Morrison fight on ESPN. Morrison was summoned to Los Angeles for a screen test, and, at the age of 21, wound up with the Tommy Gunn role in the 1990 movie.
After his 1996 HIV test in Nevada, Morrison’s news conference in Tulsa was televised by ESPN.
