Kavaliauskas shines despite defeatLithuania’s Beijing Olympian Egidijus Kavaliauskas, a veteran of the Road to Dream Program after having been part of the last few AIBA funded training camps, did himself proud in his defeat at the Olympic Games to European Champion Fred Evans from Great Britain. The Welterweight (69kg) became the first boxer from the program to gain a medal at an international event when he took bronze at the AIBA World Boxing Championships Baku 2011, eliminating none other than Fred Evans in the quarter-finals. His medal there was a great success for the Baltic country and Kavaliauskas also secured his Olympic qualification in the Azeri capital. In their re-match at the London 2012 Games, the Lithuanian, trained by national coach Vladimiras Bajevas, led 2:1 after the first round, but this time his opponent managed to impose his style to win. Kavaliauskas proved to be one tough opponent and did himself and the program extremely proud. Ghana’s AIBA African Olympic Qualifying Event Casablanca 2012 bronze medallist Duke Akueteh Micah proved he has skills after victory in his first Olympic Games contest against Mauritius’ Jason Olivier Lavigilante. However his second preliminary round opponent, Ireland’s AIBA World Championships bronze medallist Michael Conlan, was in inspired form during their contest and although he fought valiantly, Micah was ultimately defeated. There are still several boxers from the AIBA Road to London left in the draw, let’s hope that they can follow Evaldas Petrauskas into the quarter-finals.
