Champions from past and presentAs part of the 50th anniversary of the WBC, we pay a fond tribute to our marvelous world champions- stars from the past, and diamonds-rough hewn or polished, that dominate the divisions nowadays. SUPERLIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION Past...Roberto Cruz Roberto was born on November 1941 in Baguio, Philippines. He made his professional debut when he was only 14 years old against Laureano Llarenas and he was defeated by decision. The Philippine fighter continued fighting seeking his chance for the world title. The day came, March 21, 1963, that night he faced Raymundo Barrling Torres at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Roberto won the fight by an amazing KO in the first round to conquer the WBC super lightweight title. His last fight was on September 28, 1968 in Los Angeles City, Philippines where Fel Pedranza defeated him. During his career, he shaped a record of 29 wins, 12 KO’s, 12 losses and 3 draws. Present...Danny García He was born on March 20, 1988 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Danny has Puerto Rican roots but he was raised all his life in US. His father, who was a former boxer, taught. When he turned 10, Danny fell in love with boxing and became amateur US champion and conquered the Tammer title. He made his professional debut on November 17, 2007 at the Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey against Mike Denby to who he defeated by KO in the first round. Shaping a good record of victories, he got the chance of fighting for the WBC superl ightweight title on March 24, 2012 against Mexican legend Erik Morales, who lost the title for failing in making the mandatory weight for the fight. With the title almost in his pocket, Danny tried to punish the Mexican former champion who had nothing to do against Garcia so at the end of the 12 rounds Danny Garcia conquered the WBC title by UD. Danny successfully defended his title over Amir Khan by TKO in the 4th round and then had a rematch with Erik Morales where he beat him again by KO. Source: wbcboxing.com/wbcEng25/index.php |
