Euro NewsBy Per-Ake Persson Sauerland have today announced the headliners for the show at the Sporthalle in Hamburg April 27. EBU lightheavy champ Juergen Braehmer, 39-2, takes on Frenchman Tony Averlant, 18-7-2, in a voluntary defence of the title he won from Eduard Gutknecht. Gutknecht beat Averlant on points but many felt the Frenchman had nicked it - however since then Averlant lost to German Mounir Toumir in a big upset. In the co-feature jr middle "Golden" Jack Culcay, 14-0, take on Guido Nicolas Pitto, an Argentinian based in Spain, who made a big impression in stopping Dane Reda Zam Zam, and is probably the toughest opponent yet for Culcay. *********************** Mateusz Masternak´s defence of the EBU cruiser title that was first set for Denmark April 13 and then moved to Austria April 12 where they had Frenchman Jeremy Ouanna as opponent is now cancelled. Masternak will instead fight for the WBC International Silver title against Shawn Corbin and it´s back to Denmark April 13 - Fredrikshavn to be exact. *********************** Jr welter Jarkko Putkonen headlines a P 3 Boxing / Mikael Nissi promotion April 6 in Sala, Finland, Putkonen face Brahim Kamal from the Netherlands in what will be his last fight before heading to Lebanon on a six month an UN peacekeeping mission. Lightheavy Eemeli Katajisto face another Dutchman, Farouk Daku over six in the co-feature. Stiegtlitz was out fast, almost desperate, and Abraham covered up. In the second Abraham was forced to trade with Stieglitz and there were some heated exchanges with few clean punches scored. Then a right hand from Stieglitz got Abraham in big trouble and he held on and one could see the left eye begin to swell. In the third Abraham looked like an old man with eye shut and Stieglitz exploded and had Abraham in big problems. Arthur then held and punched and had a point deducted. Ulli Wegner didn´t leave the ring when the bell for the fourth rang and dr Walter Wagner checked the eye, asked Abraham if he wanted to continue and got the answer no and it was stopped. Robert Helenius, 108,6, Fin W10-U Michael Sprott, 110,3, UK 98-93 twice and 97-93 of no knockdown non-title fight. Helenius is still not ok in the right hand and without that he´s a big, tall, ordinary Euro class heavyweight. Sprott exposed him in some rounds but allowed Helenius to dictate the pace most of the way winning the fight with solid jabs and hooks. Lukas Konecny, 72,3, Cze WTD12-U Karim Archour, 72,3, Fra Konecny dominated the action most of the way in a fight with few highlights to win the vacant WBO Euro title. Lukas bled from a cut by the left eye from the second round onwards and it got worse and worse, when a second cut emerged in the final round over the right eye Konecny moved away from the action and it was waved over - both cuts were ruled as caused by accidental headclashes. It was scored 118-110 twice and 116-112. 10x2: Melissa McMorrow, 50,2, US W10-S Nadia Raoui, 49,8, Ger McMorrow retained the WIBF and WBO titles on scores of 99-91 and 96-94 while the third judge had it 96-94 for Raoui. I had it 97-03 for Mighty Melissa. Edmund Gerber, 111,8, Ger W8-U Gbenga Oloukun, 106,0, Ger 77-76 twice and 77-75. I had it 77-75 for Oloukun. Gerber did allright in the first four but then Oloukun upped the pace in the fifth and was overall the sharper man. In the final round Gerber had nothing left and was hurt by a wild right upercut and held on for dear life. Both were cut on the nose in the second with Gerber´s the worst and it kept bleeding. A rematch perhaps? Oloukun came in at short notice for Werner Kreiskott. 8x3: George Groves, 77,0, Uk TKO 2 (2.20) Baker Barakat, 77,0, Ger/gba Groves hurt the overmatched Barakat, whose boxrec record is a throwback to the good old days, late in the first, floored him the second and it was stopped with Baker against the ropes. Enrico Kölling, 80,0, Ger W6-U Josef Obeslo, 79,2, Cze 60-54 on all cards. Kölling is entertaining to watch, likes to trade, shows talent - but can´t hurt anyone it seems. 4x3: Moritz Stahl, 78,0, Ger KO 1 (1.09) Josef Orsos, 79,2, Hun Stahl took out Orsos with a left hook to the body - but Orsos could have done more to get up. (Ser?) Solis retained the IBF I/C title on scores of 116-112, 115-114 and 117-111 and while the win was clear enough - I had 117-111 - the moral victor was Larsen, who have no skills but a big punch, heart, chin and guts and kept coming getting stronger and stronger despite breathing heavily already in the first. Solis landed cleanly with exellent counters but failed to put them together and never threw combinations and he´s not a one punch knockout artist. He was cut and bruised in the eighth and a false ending after ten gave Larsen new energy and he finished strongly despite walking onto another big right in the final round that momentarily stunned him. 10x3, h: Ruslan Chagaev, Ger KO 1 (1.35) Mike Sheppard, US Big southpaw left upercut ends it early and this was the most agressive Chagaev I´ve ever seen. 12x3, sm: Uensal Arik, Ger TKO 7 (0.15) Francis Cheka, Tan Arik made a slow start but seemed to get control in the third but the rangy, awkward Cheka stood up to him and floored Arik in the fifth and had him stunned in the sixth as well. Then early in the seventh Arik attacked as if crazy and Cheka covered up well with nothing getting through - and then came the towel in a stupid or - take your pick - corrupt retirement. It was scored 57-56 twice and 58-56 for Cheka after six. w: Selcuk Aydin, Tur W10-U Giuseppe Lauri, Hun 100-90 on all cards but Lauri came through the fight without getting hurt and did well while Aydin kept loading up and looked slow and ponderous.
