Euro NewsBy Per-Ake Persson WBO supermiddle champ Robert Stieglitz will defend the title October 19 at the Mess Hall in Leipzig. The opponent will be announced at a press conference next Monday (Sep 2). Stieglitz, promoted by SES, won the title with a stoppage win over Arthur Abraham and a third showdown against Abraham might on the horizon but most likely not this year. ************************ Belgian featherweight Alex Miskirtchian, # 3 in the IBF ratings, have relinquished the EBU featherweight title to concentrate on a IBF eliminator for the # 1 spot. At first # 4 Australian Billy Dib was in the picture but he pulled out and there are now negotiations with Frenchman Sofiane Takoucht, # 5 in the IBF ratings. Number one and two are both vacant. Miskirtchian´s decision to vacate the title have over the last few days affected a number of fighters. First Alex´s voluntary defence against Italian Davide Dieli was cancelled, then the above mentioned Takoucht was named mandatory challenger along with Brit Lee Selby, who already was OC. Takoucht have now pulled out to go for the eliminator against Miskirtchian. Fighting for the vacant EBU title is now Selby and Ukrainian Oleg Yefemovich and the EBU have set September 23 as deadline for purse bids. *********************** Fighter Elvis Promotion, headed by former EU and WBA Int´l lightheavy champ Elvis Michalenko, promotes a show September 14 at the Kipsala Exhibition Center in Riga, Latvia, billed as the Ring Stars. On top hardpunching Congolese cruiser, based in France, Youri Kayembre Kalenga, 16-0, face Latvian Arturs Kulikauskis11-18-3, in a scheduled ten-rounder with the vacant Int´l Latvian title at stake. On paper it looks like a safe win for Kalenga but Kulikauskas have most of his losses on the road against the best in Europe so there´s room for an upset. Supermiddle Olegs Fedotovs fights September 7 Frederikshavn, Denmark, against Simen Smaadal but will if all goes well take on Gatis Skuja with the vacant national title at stake. The undercard feature two more profights, amateurboxing, MMA and K 1. Euro ResultsBy Per-Ake Persson Aug 24, Schwerin, GER; Stadt - und Kongresshalle, est 4000 (SRO), Sauerland Event, FvA Jürgen Brähmer, 79,0, Ger W12-U Stefano Abatangelo, 74,8, Ita Brähmer retained the EBU title and added the WBO Int´l title to his collection with a win on scores 119-108 twice and 115-111. Abatangelo was cut around the left eye in the fourth after a clash of heads, got another cut in the seventh after another clash of heads, bled from the nose, had a point deducted for punching after the break in the fifth but held and smothered the champion throughout. Braehmer was also cut in the fourth and got nowhere with the much shorter Italian after a start where it seemed as if he held back to give the fans some entertainment. Instead it became a drag with few clean punches. Arthur Abraham, 168, Ger W12-U Willford Shihepo, 74,8, Nam Abraham won the vacant WBO I/C title with an unimpressive win on scores of 116-113, 116-112 and 117-111. Shihepo had Abraham in trouble in fourth and fifth but was often off balance and too wide with his punches. Abraham was at times sleepwalking but won fair enough. Kubrat Pulev, 114,7, Bul W12-U Tony Thompson, 119,7, US Pulev retained the IBF Int´l title and won this final IBF eliminator on scores 117-111, 116-112 and 118-110. After a tense, tactical first two Pulev pulled ahead with his jab, right hand and better speed. Thompson seemed to fade a little in every round but began to take it on the inside in the seventh and got Pulev under pressure. The Bulgarian held but was troubled by Thompson´s all out effort that continued through the 8th ... but after that Tony faded again and seemed to settle for points loss. Tyron Zeuge, 77,0, Ger W8-U Nathan King, 76,8, UK Zeuge outboxed King, who kept coming and kept walking into stiff right hand counters for eight rounds. It was scored 79-73 twice and 78-74. Dustin Dirks, 80,8, Ger D8-S Tomas Adamek, 80,4, Cze 76-75 Dirks, 77-75 Adamek and 76-76. Adamek scored with a right in the fourth but was cut as heads clashed, turned his back to the action and got a standing eight count. He still seemed to outpunch Dirks and looked a comfortable winner at the end. I had it 77-74 for Adamek - but only if I give 10-8 in fourth. 8x3: Enrico Koelling, 81,0, Ger TKO 3 (0.19) Haris Causevic, 79,1, Aus Causevic took a bad beating and was told after the second if he didn´t do better in the third it would be stopped - he didn´t and it was stopped with Haris´ bleeding badly from the nose.
