Mendoza Ko’s Negron in huge upset
The fight took place on Friday night at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Mendoza almost finished Negron at the end of round two, but he was saved by the bell. He continued to land punches at the beginning of round three, dropping Negron twice and forcing the referee to end the fight. Time was 2:03.
Mendoza is no stranger to knocking out unbeaten fighters having taken the ‘O’ from Tokunbo Olajide (2002), and Rubin Williams (2003), however at age 35, a career high weight of 207.6 lbs. and a loser of eight of his last eleven, this result was quite unexpected.
In the main event, unbeaten lightweight Jose Gonzalez (17-0, 13 KOs) demolished Eddie Soto (12-3, 4 KOs) with a crushing right to the head in the first round to retain his WBO latino 135lb title. Time was 1:10. Soto was taken from the ring on a stretcher.
Also, unbeaten bantamweight McJoe Arroyo (8-0, 5 KOs) needed just 1:35 to blitz overmatched Ivan Moxey (2-6, 1 KO).

Epifanio Mendoza Stops Carlos Negron in a Shocker
Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico - In a bout for the WBO Latino lightweight title, Jose Gonzalez (17-0, 13KOs) knocked out Eddie Soto (12-3, 4KOs) at 1:10 of the first round. Soto was decked hard on his back with a big right hand.
Upset minded Epifanio Mendoza (33-12, 28 KOs), who started his career at junior middleweight, knocked out previously undefeated heavyweight prospect Carlos Negron (13-1, 9 KOs). Mendoza badly hurt Negron at the end of the second round, but the Puerto Rican boxer was saved by the bell. In the third, Mendoza dropped him twice to finish him off at 2:03 into the round.
Negron, making his fourth appearance at heavyweight, was being built slowly by Puerto Rico Best Boxing as a possible future threat and he planned to target a regional title in 2012. Negron, at 6'6, began his career at cruiserweight. Mendoza was making his second appearance at the weight. During his career, he shocked other unbeten boxers like Rubin Williams and Tokunbo Olajide, but during his recent cruiserweight run he was overwhelmed and stopped by such fighters as Lateef Kayode and BJ Flores.
Bantamweight prospect McJoe Arroyo (8-0, 5 KOs) returned for the first time after rehabing an injury to his jaw, and destroyed Ivan Moxey(2-6, 1 KO) in less than a minute of the first round.
