WBC Light Welterweight champion, Monica Acosta has scraped away with a majority decision win 96-94 (Acosta), 97-93 (Acosta), & 95-95 (Draw) over Australian, Erin McGowan to retain her title tonight in Argentina.
Erin was hoping to become the first Australian women to be a multiple world champion. She had stepped up in weight divisions and traveled from her base in Florida to stamp her place in Australia’s sporting record books.
Erin was looking very relaxed early and came out firing the jabs well. Monica looked to be in trouble from Erin’s power and was cut above her left eye early.
In the fifth round, Monica started to clinch and grab onto Erin whenever in trouble causing the ref to come in and gave her a breather.
The holding became more prominent as the fight went on which caused it to be a scrappy affair late with the referee being called to work many times. Midway through the 8th round the two had a head clash which worsened the cut above Acosta’s eye which ended up opening in the latter stages of the final round.
Most people felt that McGowan had done enough to record a famous victory (Aus Boxing.com scored it 7-3) but 2 of the judges scored it otherwise with the end result being a majority decision loss for the Australian.
