Billy Dib to defend world title in Sydney
Australia's IBF featherweight boxing world champion Billy Dib will make his first defence in Sydney on November 19, after returning from rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the fight game.
Dib comes home this weekend from a three-week trip to the United States, during which he met officials from Golden Boy Promotions and caught up with Floyd Mayweather Jr and Victor Ortiz, who fight each other in Las Vegas in a WBC welterweight title clash.
"To show you the commitment of Billy, he had the opportunity to stay there and watch Victor and Floyd's fight (this weekend), but he's coming back a couple of days early, because it's the exact day he's going to come back to start his training camp," Dib's brother and manager Emaid told AAP.
He said while a challenger still had to be locked in, Dib would fight a "very credible top 15-ranked opponent" in November and was committed to making his first stand as the IBF champion in his home city, despite renewed interest from Golden Boy in him fighting in America.
Dib was previously contracted to Golden Boy, but rebuilt his career as an independent operator after losing a WBO world title fight to Steven Luevano in 2008.
"We had a four-year contract with Golden Boy Promotions and Billy had six fights with them. When he lost his world title fight, he needed to be built up a little bit more," Emaid Dib said.
"It was an amicable sort of breakup. They just said 'go back, Billy, do a little bit more work'.
"He's been spending some time with Golden Boy Promotions and they are really, really keen on promoting him over there at the moment.
"He had a meeting there yesterday (with Golden Boy officials) and the meeting went really, really well.
"They are hoping to promote him in America again and he just told them that he wanted to fight at home and build himself at home.
"We possibly may (have) one fight a year overseas, but the majority of his fights, he wants them at home."
He said his brother caught up with unbeaten pound-for-pound superstar Mayweather this week and had spent a couple of days with WBC welterweight world champion Ortiz.
"Ortiz and him are good friends from when they were in the Golden Boy stable and they fought on a few cards they shared in America," Emaid Dib said.
"Victor Ortiz is coming out in November. He wants to come out and surf in Australia, but he said, more importantly, 'Billy, I want to come out and watch your world title defence'."
