Narrow losses for 'Road to Baku' membersThree young light flyweight boxers from the AIBA 'Road to Baku' program started their competition on the AIBA World Boxing Championships' opening day. Guatemala's Central American and Caribbean Games silver medallist, Alvaro Vargas who was very satisfied with training facilities in Baku had to fight against Egypt's Arabic Games bronze medallist, 22-year-old Ramy Helmi El-Awadi. The 20-year-old Guatemalan who is only boxing since 2006 was two points behind after six minutes and tried to turn back the fight. But the experienced Egyptian finally won the bout by 16:11. Kyrgyzstan's Asian Championships bronze medallist and Duisenkul Shopokov Memorial Tournament winner, 23-year-old Asylbek Nazaraliev had to fight against India's Asian Youth Championships silver medallist Laishram Devendro Singh who surprisingly secured his place in the national team. The Kyrgyz was defeated by another Indian competitor, Amandeep Singh in the semi-finals of the Asian Championships and also failed to reach the Top32 in Baku. The final verdict was a close 14:8 to the 19-year-old Laishram Devendro Singh. The third 'Road to Baku' member of this opening day was El Salvador's Central American Games winner, 24-year-old Jhon Nelson Corona. His African rival in the first preliminary round was Uganda's All Africa Games bronze medallist and Beijing Olympian, Ronald Serugo. Jhon Nelson Corona was also member of the AIBA 'Road to Milan' program two years ago but failed in his first contest against Brazil's Paulo Carvalho in the Mediolanum Forum. On his second world event, Corona also lost his light flyweight bout by 15:6. Therefore he will try to reach the Olympic quota in April 2012.
