Manoj, Dinesh inch closer to Olympic qualification, Suranjoy out
Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Manoj Kumar's sensational upset win over a European champion left him just one step away from Olympic qualification but it was curtains for Suranjoy Singh as he was ousted following a second-round loss in the World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Indian boxers charge ahead
Indian boxer Manoj Kumar is a step away from qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics after he beat European champion Raymond Moylette on Sunday to advance to the pre-qaurters of the World Boxing Championships in Azerbaijan.
Manoj, who beat Moylette 19-7, will next meet China's Qing Hu in the welterweight division (64kg). Dinesh Kumar, of the light heavyweight (81kg) category, too qualified to the next round after his opponent Bosko Draskovic was disqualified for bending too much.
"Manoj fought very intelligently. He targetted this guy's body and invited him before coming up with his uppercuts and hooks. Dinesh was also very dominant throughout and even though Montenegro was not happy with the disqualification, the truth is that the guy was bending too much," said Gurbax Singh Sandhu, India's national boxing coach.
Dinesh will meet Australia's Damien Hooper in the next round. Manoj and Dinesh will qualify for the Olympics only if they win their next round matches.
There was some bad news too for the Indian camp as Suranjoy Singh's qualifying dreams ended after he lost 14-17 in his second round match to ninth seed Nyambayar Tugstsogt.
"It is a very disappointing result. Even though Suranjoy fought back in the second round but in the final round, he got hit by a very nasty uppercut. That upset his rhythm and the Mongolian benefitted from that," said Sandhu.
