Impressive Brook proves credentialsSheffield welterweight Kell Brook took a significant step towards a world title shot in the new year with a comprehensive stoppage win over Poland's Rafal Jackiewicz. Brook's WBA Inter-Continental title was on the line against Jackiewicz, but more importantly the fight doubled up as an eliminator for a shot at the WBA ruler Viacheslav Senchenko. Brook, who now boasts a perfect record of 25 wins and no losses, could not have sent a more definitive message to the rest of the welterweight division in front of a sold-out hometown crowd at the Ponds Forge Arena. Jackiewicz (38-10-1) had never previously failed to hear the final bell in his 48-fight career, but was outclassed from the off. At the conclusion the Minsk man looked a shadow of the respected world-level campaigner he has become in recent years and, although he did not look in significant danger when the stoppage came, referee Howard Foster stepped in after six rounds of incessant punishment. As Amir Khan prepares to step up to 147lbs in 2012, a mouth-watering all-British clash with Brook has been mooted, and the 24-year-old undoubtedly looks like a man ready to rub shoulders at boxing's top table. Brook began confidently, his jab regularly finding its way through Jackiewicz's guard to leave the former European champion with reddened features at the end of the opener. It was a similar story in the second and when Jackiewicz finally slipped Brook's slick range-finder to get inside, he received a right hook to the temple for his troubles. Unfortunately for the 34-year-old Pole, Brook started to bring out his full array of shots through rounds three and four. A double jab into a left-hook dished out further damage to the head, while a rapid combination to the body had Jackiewicz gasping for air. A small cut above the left eye and increased swelling meant the challenger's corner were earning their purse and Brook ramped up the intent in five, repeatedly crashing home right crosses off the left lead. The end came in the next session as Brook rounded off a clinical display in style. After raining down the punches on the ropes, the champion beckoned his beleaguered opponent back towards the centre of the ring where a concussive left stiffened Jackiewicz's legs, and as further rights came in Foster decided he had seen enough. Brilliant Brook demolishes JackiewiczKell Brook passed another audition for a world-title shot by defeating Rafal Jackiewicz, forcing a sixth-round stoppage following a masterful performance in a WBA welterweight eliminator in Sheffield. With the victory, Brook extended his unbeaten record to 25 fights, defended the WBA Inter-Continental title - and became the first man to defeat Jackiewicz within the distance. The fight was a total mismatch from the first bell, proving decisively that Brook is worthy of a tilt at a world title. However, his options are narrowed by the fact he competes at welterweight, a division where two of the major belts are held by Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Manny Pacquiao, neither of whom are likely to face him any time soon. His promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed preliminary discussions have been held with Andre Berto, the IBF champion, while WBA king Viacheslav Senchenko is also a possibility. Brook looked in a different league to his opponent across the opening three sessions, boxing expertly and patiently - and always making it count when opting to attack. The Brit's jab homed in on Jackiewicz, who was showing obvious signs of swelling after a third round in which he failed to land a single punch. The home favourite opened up in the fourth, letting his hands loose as a shell-shocked Jackiewicz began to anxiously look towards his corner, having once again failed to make any impression. Jackiewicz did well to weather a fifth-round storm, his legs remaining steady despite being clipped by two heavy shots - but Brook really was in cruise control, with nothing coming back at him. Brook stormed into the centre of the ring after leaving his stool at the start of the sixth, apparently taking the handbrake off in order to hunt a stoppage. He did not have to wait long, as a helpless-looking Jackiewicz was pulled out by the referee with 24 seconds to go before the round ended. "I didn't really get out of second gear," Brook told Sky Sports. "The first three rounds I was in first gear. I was stepping it up slowly but surely. It was a fair stoppage because he was about to go, his face was a bit of a mess. I caught him with a few nice shots, he wobbled badly and I was just about to step it up." ![]() Brook closer to world title after impressive displayWelterweight contender Kell Brook looked every bit the part as he stopped Poland’s Rafal Jackiewicz in their WBA world title eliminator on Saturday night. In front of a sell-out crowd at the Ponds Forge Arena in Brook’s hometown of Sheffield, the local boy cruised to a sixth round stoppage as he outclassed the rugged Pole from the first round. Jackiewicz, who had never previously failed to hear the final bell in his 48-fight career, struggled to cope with the speed and accuracy of Brook’s jab, and was picked off at will by a variety of shots coming his way. At the conclusion Jackiewicz looked a shadow of the respected world-level campaigner he has become in recent years and referee Howard Foster stepped in after the answers coming back from the Pole became more and more subdued. ‘I was just enjoying myself out there - I didn't really get out of second gear,’ Brook told Sky Sports afterwards. ‘The first three rounds I would probably say I was in first gear. I was just about to step it up and then the referee stopped it.’ Also in the post-fight interview promoter Eddie Hearn mooted a future fight with light-welterweight champ Amir Khan for his fighter, claiming the contest was a ‘natural’ match up and one that has to happen in 2012.
