MANILA, Philippines - World bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. is not only highly favored to win his October 22 match against Argentina's Omar Narvaez - a boxing analyst is convinced that the fight is a "mismatch." Sean Morehouse of The Boxing Tribune said he expects Donaire to 'obliterate' Narvaez and extend his 25-match winning streak.
Morehouse said Narvaez, who has a 35-0 win-loss record, is "no scrub." "Despite being a natural flyweight, he is a skilled fighter, undefeated, and would likely give the average bantamweight belt-holder trouble," he added. The problem, according to Morehouse, is that Donaire is "light years beyond your average bantamweight champion." The analyst said that as exciting as Donaire's fights have been - he cited Donaire's stunning knockout wins over Vic Darchinyan and Fernando Montiel as examples - he is getting tired of watching "The Filipino Flash" beat up smaller opponents. "I know going into any Donaire fight at 118 pounds that he can basically knock his opponent out whenever he feels like it, and it robs the bout of any potential drama," Morehouse said. Donaire has said in numerous interviews that his biggest challenge for the fight is giving Narvaez his first career loss, although the Filipino-American boxer has remained confident. "If I hit the right spot, if I hit the right point, it can end any moment," Donaire said in an interview. Donaire has made no secret of his intention to move up in weight after the Narvaez bout, and Morehouse said this is the correct move. "Donaire's true greatness might not be tested until he finds himself in the featherweight division, or perhaps even higher on the scales," Morehouse said. A fight with Japanese champion Toshiaki Nishioka will be a good start for Donaire, Morehouse added, but the truly exciting fight will be against Yuriorkis Gamboa, the Cuban featherweight king. Morehouse feels that victories over fighters like Nishioka and Gamboa will cement Donaire's place in the pound-for-pound rankings. "I for one will not be fully sold on him as a top pound-for-pound fighter until he picks on somebody his own size," he said.
