Sergio Mora puts on show in win
INDIO — Sergio Mora put on an impressive display with flashy combinations to stop Shibata Flores after the seventh round Friday night at Fantasy Springs' Special Events Center.

Mora, who fought Shane Mosley to a draw last year and split two fights against Vernon Forrest, was impressive all night with his speed and multiple combinations that caused swelling over Flores' eyes.After the first round, Mora also played joker. After slipping through the ropes at the end of the first round, he got up quickly saying, “I'm not Bernard Hopkins,” referring to the controversial ending to the Hopkins-Chad Dawson fight last month.
The one local fighter on the card, Coachella's Jose Vargas, scored a rugged unanimous decision over Oscar Chinchilla in a six-round lightweight bout.
Vargas dropped Chinchilla in the second round, which made a difference as the judges scored the bout 59-54, 58-55 and 57-56. Working against Vargas was a right eye that was cut in the first round and closed after the third round thereafter.
The ringside doctor checked on the eye after the third round and after each round.
Lee Espinoza, the godfather of local boxing, worked diligently on the eye so it wouldn't become a detriment.
“You know, he was working the eye and putting pressure on it,” Vargas said. “He's a good cut man with a lot of experience and he stopped the bleeding. He also motivated. With his help, he pulled me through.”
Vargas also credited his trainer, Marcos Caballero, who helped him through despite Vargas fighting the second half of the fight half-blind.
“He was my other eye, telling me what to do and we were able to outbox him,” Vargas said.
Vargas said after the post-fight interview that he was going to the hospital to get stitches and have the doctors look after his right hand.
Vargas said he hurt his hand when he knocked down Chinchilla in the second round.
“When I connected, I could feel the pain,” said Vargas, who wants to get a second opinion on his hand for precautionary reasons. “It was a solid punch and I made a good connection. Even though I hurt it, I was still able to use it.”
In one of the earlier bouts, Ray Rivera stayed undefeated at 2-0, earning a split decision over Cleven Ishe, despite Ishe dropping Rivera in the fourth and final round.
The next fight at Fantasy Springs will feature local favorite Randy Caballero defending his title against Arturo Santiago.
Caballero is 7-0 at Fantasy Springs, and Dec. 2 will be the first time he's the main event.
