Giuriceo wins his first professional title
CAMPBELL - Boxer Jake "The Bull" Giuriceo (14-0-1) can now be referred to as the Universal Boxing Organization All-America Lightweight champion after defeating Bryne Green (7-5-1) Saturday night.
"That kid tonight was very tough," Giuriceo said. "He's gone the distance with a couple of guys. He came here to win this belt. He didn't come here to lose."
Giuriceo won 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94 in a unanimous decision.
"I just got to praise God for this," Giuriceo said. "Without the Lord in my life, I wouldn't be here today. I would probably be dead somewhere for all I know."
The fight lasted all 10 rounds without any knock downs. Giuriceo said he knew he would have to go the distance coming in.
"Frankie (Duarte) just told me to start the fight, be patient, don't let the crowd influence you and just work on what we've been working on," Giuriceo said. "I felt like I was coming on stronger and stronger every round, and I feel like I've shown a lot of different boxing skills tonight than I have in any of my other fights. I felt like my left hand was just going to work."
The fight took place at the St. Lucy Assumption Center in Campbell, Giuriceo's hometown. He said the location was never an issue.
"I love to be able to feed off of their energy, but you also can't let them influence the way you fight," Giuriceo said. "If this fight was out of town, I'd still train as hard as I have, and I would still go out there and give a great performance like I did tonight no matter where we would have fought."
Giuriceo said last week his endurance was his best boxing aspect. He said Saturday his trainers, Duarte and Keith Burnside, want to see more power, but it doesn't bother Giuriceo one bit.
"I think I just got to learn to be more accurate with the punches," he said.
Another aspect Giuriceo said he did not have was that he didn't stay close enough with Green.
"I felt that I could've stayed closer to him longer which could've made more of a 'Giuriceo fight', but I let him get off a little bit which I shouldn't have," he said.
Giuriceo worked out in Youngstown and California this year and said training with Duarte in California helped him out.
"I sparred with the greatest guys in the lightweight division out there in California," Giuriceo said. "I was in there with John John Molina, I was in there with Ponce de LeonI just got great works from great fighters, and there was no way tonight I was going to come here and lose to this kid."
Giuriceo added that he was hoping for an easier night.
"Couldn't get the job done like I wanted to, but I felt excellent throughout every round," Giuriceo said. "I felt like I won every round; I really did feel comfortable in every round. We put in seven hard weeks, and it all paid off tonight. I worked my butt off."
Giuriceo said he is now going to enjoy the holidays with a possible ESPN show in February but knows one event for sure.
"The one thing I know is that I'm getting married in May, and I'm going to be a happy man," Giuriceo said. "I might wear the belt to the wedding."
