Julio building his own legendJulio Cesar Chavez Jr, nicknamed Son of the Legend, is still unbeaten after 45 professional fights. Chavez retained his WBC middleweight title when he stopped Peter Manfredo Jr in the fifth round of their fight in Houston, Texas, on Saturday night.
Making the first defence of his belt, Chavez took control from the first bell and dominated Manfredo, the son of another former boxer. Manfredo was hurt in the fifth round and when he was not fighting back referee Laurence Cole stopped the fight 1 minute 52 seconds into the round. Chavez improved his record to 44-0-1, with 31 knockouts. Manfredo dropped to 37-7; 20. On the same card Joshua Clottey returned in style after his loss last year to Manny Pacquiao. Clottey moved to 36-4; 21 when he stopped Calvin Green (21-6-1; 13) at 1 minute 56 seconds of the second round of a middleweight bout. Earlier lightweight Mickey Bey Jr remained undefeated at 18-0-1; 9 when he beat veteran Hector Velazquez (51-17-3; 35) on points over eight rounds. The scores were 76-75, 78-73 and 77-74. Light-heavyweight Marcus Johnson (20-1; 15) beat Billy Bailey (10-12; 4) on points over six. OTHER RESULTS London: Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli knocked out Gyorgy Marosi only 91 seconds after the first bell, improving his record to 33-5; 26. Fighting at light-heavyweight at the York Hall, “Macca” staggered the previously unbeaten Marosi (12-1; 8) with a combination and referee Jeff Hinds wasted no time to step in. Cruiserweight Tony Conquest improved to 8-0; 2 when he beat Toks Owoh (20-6; 11) on points over ten rounds. Melbourne, Australia: Middleweight Sam Soliman outpointed Eromosele Albert over 12 rounds in an IBF elimination bout. The scores were 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112. In a bout for the vacant Australian light-heavyweight title, Blake Caparello stopped Michael van Nimwegen in the seventh round. Acapulco, Mexico: Junior welterweight Roberto Ortiz (22-0-1; 19) knocked out Carlos Urias (45-22-1; 34) in the sixth round. Ortiz retained his WBC Silver light-welterweight belt. Mexico City: Gamliel Diaz improved to 34-9-2; 16 and retained his WBC CABOFE super-featherweight title when he stopped Adriel Juzaino (18-10-2; 8) in the second round. It was Diaz’s seventh defence. Huntington, New York: Junior welterweight Chris Algieri (12-0; 6) beat Bayan Jargal (15-4-2; 10) on points over ten rounds – 97-93 on two cards and 98-92. Atlantic City: USBA cruiserweight champion Garrett Wilson 11-5-1; 5 knocked out Chuck Mussachio (17-2-2; 5) 54 seconds into the second round. Welterweight Ronald Cruz remained unbeaten and moved to 15-0; 12 when he stopped Anges Adjaho (25-7; 14) after 2 minutes 54 seconds of the fifth round. Tokyo: Ryosuke Iwasa (10-1; 7) won the Japanese bantamweight title when he won on points over ten rounds against Jerope Mercado Zuiyama (24-2-3; 8). The scores were 98-92 on two cards and 97-92.
