Top Rank vs. Golden Boy not the fight boxing fans want
Boxing fans write it every day in their Twitter message and Facebook updates, “Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions inability to make Manny Paquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather is killing boxing.”
First of all, boxing is far from dead, if anything it is immensely popular on a global level. Unfortunately, boxing here in the United States has declined a bit due to poor marketing, an illogical broadcasting plan, and short sighted promoters.
I do agree that Golden Boy and Top Rank aren’t helping the sport of boxing by keeping their feud hot and heavy, thus keeping Mayweather and Pacquiao away from each other.
The CNN and ESPN crowd is hot for Pacquiao – Mayweather, the fans who push Pay Per View buys from 800,000 buys into a million or more purchases.
That being said, Golden Boy and Top Rank’s inability to work together to make any intriquing fights is what is truly hurting the sport.
A Mayweather – Pacquiao moment comes along every ten years or so, but consistent quality matchmaking that produces exciting and meaningful bouts is what keeps the sport alive and creates booms of popularity.
It is a sad state of affairs when boxing fans, the rank and file, cannot even consider particular mouth watering bouts because the opponents are represents by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions.
Here are a few quick reasons why Top Rank and Golden Boy are hurting boxing…
1. Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Adrian Broner
2. Adrian Broner vs. Brandon Rios
3. Brandon Rios vs. Marcos Maidana
4. Marcos Maidana vs. Mike Alvarado
5. Mike Alvarado vs. Lucas Matthysse
6. Lucas Matthysse vs. Brandon Rios
7. Brandon Rios vs. Juan Manuel Marquez
8. Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Amir Khan
9. Amir Khan vs. Manny Pacquiao
10. Manny Pacquiao vs. Saul Alvarez
11. Saul Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto
12. Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland
13. James Kirkland vs. Antonio Margarito
14. Antonio Margarito vs. Alfredo Angulo
15. Alfredo Angulo vs. Miguel Cotto
And that is just a short list, after about two minutes of brainstorming.
So is Mayweather vs. Pacquiao not happening hurting the sport, or Golden Boy vs. Top Rank - the fight no fans wants to see?
