Women’s Boxing to be Included in Commonwealth GamesThe Commonwealth Games Federation’s General Assembly have confirmed that women’s boxing will be included in the competition from 2014 onwards. The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has welcomed the move by the Commonwealth Games to include women’s boxing in future editions of the competition. Women will now be able to compete in three unconfirmed categories at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and all future commonwealth games therein after. “By having taken this decision, the hopes and dreams of many young female boxers will come true after their lifetime ambitions to win medals at the Commonwealth Games was made possible,” said the Association’s president, Ching-Kuo Wu. The move to include the sport has followed on from the International Olympic Committee’s decision in 2009 to allow women boxers a chance to compete for gold. At the time, British sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe praised the Olympic bosses’ decision: “This move is a massive boost for women’s boxing,” he said. “It will give female boxers the chance to showcase their talents on the biggest sporting stage.” The high profile exposure that boxing has received after these two landmark decisions has angered campaigns that call for the sport to be banned. A spokesman for the British Medical Association (BMA) said: “Irrespective of their gender, during the course of a fight boxers can suffer acute brain haemorrhage and serious damage to their eyes, ears and nose. “Unlike other sports, the aim of boxing is to inflict bodily harm on an opponent.” The Commonwealth games are held every four years by a country from the Commonwealth of Nations. The next edition will be hosted by Glasgow in 2014. By Michelle Davies Image Courtesy of Steve Tolcher Source: www.thefreshoutlook.com/ |
