FROCH OUTCLASSED BY WARD TO LAND SUPER SIX TITLE

Froch outclassed by Ward as Cobra lacks venom to land Super Six title

Carl Froch had no answer to Andre Ward's class and pedigree as the unbeaten American lifted the Super Six tournament trophy and unified two world titles with an impressive unanimous decision win.

Ward, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, produced a performance of technical brilliance to see off dangerous Briton Froch in Atlantic City with a relatively comfortable points win.

Defeat for Froch will hurt the Nottingham man's pride but he will take heart from the fact his participation in the final, and his reputation as one of the sport's genuine warriors, will allow him opportunities to bounce back.

Outclassed: Froch was no match for Ward who lifted the Super Six title

The 34-year-old Briton was putting his own WBC title on the line against unbeaten American Ward, who was defending his WBA belt.

Despite his incredible recent record, Nottingham's Froch (now 28-2, 20KOs) was rated as generously as 14/5 by some bookmakers to win while Ward (now 25-0, 13KOs) had been quoted at 4/11.

A Ward left hook was the highlight of a quiet opener as Froch landed a jab but then took two accurate jabs.

Sharp jabs and left hooks, combined with his trademark awkwardness, were edging it for Ward in the early exchanges.

Froch landed a solid left-right double to Ward's body in the closing moments of the second but Ward had surely taken the points over the three minutes.

A close third was busier but Ward's quick jab and smart left hooks were giving him the advantage while Froch had to be content with sporadic but solid body shots.

Froch needed to press the issue and both men landed single uppercuts at the start of the fourth.

Ward's weakness is supposedly his lack of power but a right hand landed hard on Froch's chin after being set up by a flick of the jab.

Ward, not Froch, was forcing the issue and had his opponent looking uncomfortable on the ropes.

Froch roared back though, firing off winging shots which were untidy and largely inaccurate but still got Ward off his case for a moment, only for the

American to finish strongly with another left hook. Two more searing lefts began the fifth brightly for Ward. Froch later chased him across the canvas only to be picked off once again by the cool Californian.

A rare jab landed for Froch but Ward still had the upper hand.

Froch, whose nose had been reddening since the early stages, was making more of an argument of it but a right in the sixth was Ward's best work at that point.

Froch then landed a power shot but was stung by a left coming the other way as the fight threatened to burst into life.

The scrappy nature continued as Ward drove him an overhand right before tying his man up on the ropes.

Froch desperately needed to revert to a back-up plan and force Ward into a fight but that was easier said than done against the skilful and canny American.

The first sign of contentious tactics saw Froch warned for an unorthodox shot with the back of the hand before Ward held him off dubiously after being caught by a rare body shot.

Froch jumped forward with a left hand but still lost the eighth - which ended with Froch catching Ward with a naughty shot after the bell.

Ward trapped Froch in a neutral corner in the ninth and chopped in a right hand but the Englishman showed his resistance to shake it off and at least try to battle back. A right landed to little effect before both men traded in the centre of the ring.

Froch won perhaps his first round of the night in the ninth as he threw more jabs from his hip and finally started following them up with straight rights.

Froch was finally injecting some spite into his punches even if Ward was still boxing well using the jab and left hook.

Froch fired off a powerful right in the 11th and was belatedly making a real fight of it but at that stage it looked too little, too late.

It was time for Froch to lay it all on the line in the 12th but he needed a knockout, and was not helped by a time out for Ward's mouthguard to be rinsed and put back in.

Ward tried to keep Froch at arm's length while the Englishman scored with an uppercut.

Ward had the crowd on their feet as he coasted to the win via a unanimous decision with scores of 115-113 by two judges and 118-110 by the third, British judge John Keane.

Froch gave a candid assessment of his performance.
'I had a bad night,' he said. 'I couldn't get anything going. That's due to Andre Ward's defensive skills. He's very slippery and tricky in close.

Unanimous: Froch failed to land enough shots to claim the crown, but has already said he'd like a rematch

'I wanted to put my shots together. He moves low and slips and slides, he's very clever up close.

'It was very frustrating for me tonight. Fair play to him. Up close when he was leaning on me, he seems to be able to get his head there, get his shoulder in the way.

'He's either up close smothering your work, or he's too far out of range. I could never get my shots away.'

Froch hinted he would be keen on a rematch.

'I'll speak to my promoter and have a look at what options are out there,' he said. 'I honestly feel I could beat Andre Ward on a good night. I'd have to work on some technical things. But there are other fights out there.'

Ward felt his superior speed was key to his victory. Asked how quickly he realised he was causing Froch trouble, he said: 'Right away. I was surprised at how slow Froch was. We were able to beat him to the punch.

'You don't get points for leaving the chin open. You can't fight like that and expect not to get hit.

'(My mind) is one of the strongest assets I have. I kept my composure, stayed calm and we pulled it off tonight.'

Carl Froch loses WBC/WBA supermiddleweight unification title fight in Las Vegas

Carl Froch pledged to restore pride to British boxing in his 12st world title unification bout against unbeaten American Andre Ward, but has become the latest victim of defeat on foreign shores.

Eight boxers in all in 2011. Another loss. It has been a poor year for British fighters abroad on the world scene. Nine losses, one draw, only two victories, and those two victories belong to fighters who have lost their titles in the last eight days.

The Nottingham boxer was outworked by the slick skills of the former Olympic light-heavyweight champion, on a night when the British fighter failed to deliver the kind of punishing blows which took him to this level.

The now former WBC supermiddleweight champion Froch had 20 knockouts coming into this, his 30th professional fight, but missed time and again with his power shots during an absorbing, if one-sided contest witnessed by 5,626 spectators at the Boardwalk Hall.

Froch’s assertion had come after a disastrous series of defeats at world level for British fighters this year, including heavyweight David Haye’s defeat to Wladimir Klitschko in Germany, and light-welterweight Amir Khan’s disputed split points decision loss last weekend to Lamont Peterson in Washington DC.

British fighters in world title bouts abroad have now returned a 2-9-1, win-loss-draw record across this year.

The only remaining British world champion is Welshman Nathan Cleverly, the World Boxing Organisation light-heavyweight champion, yet he is still to be tested at the very highest level.

The judges scored this contest 115-113, 115-113, 118-110 all in favour of Ward.

Your correspondent had it 117-112 in Ward’s favour, Froch’s coming back in the last third of the fight. I scored three of the last four rounds for Froch, with the tenth drawn. Up to then, it was all Ward, who slipped and ducked, landing his left hook time and again, and beating the proud Briton to the jab. In close, he tied up cleverly.

Froch never broke mentally, but Ward never allowed him to work.

Froch was gracious in defeat. The 34-year-old, who lost for the second time in 30 contests, said: “Credit to Ward. He was very slippery, and tricky in close. He ducks and slips and slides. He was slick and elusive and did a good job of keeping himself out of harms way.”

“It was quite hard to hit him. The name of the game is not to get hit and he did that well. It was a bad night for me, I could not get anything going.

Even when he was tired his defensive skills and ability to keep himself safe were excellent . I’ve never had someone hit me like that in the chest and I had trouble dealing with that.”

Ward, the unified champion and still unbeaten after 25 fights, explained: “I felt good. It was a tough fight. I hurt my left hand in training and could not say anything about. I hurt it on the top of his head in the sixth round, but we got through it.”

“I’d like to thank Jesus Christ. I had a supernatural intervention at the Olympics and me coming through this tournament as a young pup was supernatural as well. We wanted to fight on the inside, and on the outside and we pulled it out tonight. That’s what won us to the fight.”

Ward added: “I hurt him several times tonight. I felt it and I saw it in his eyes. I have more to prove. I can still get better. I deserve a long rest. I was surprised how slow Froch was. I could see his punches coming.”

The two men were contesting the final of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, a made-for-television super-middleweight tournament organised by US broadcasters Showtime, which brought together six of the world's leading 12st boxers two years ago. It has taken 27 months to culminate.

Froch was contesting his seventh consecutive world title bout with the opportunity not only to reinforce himself as Britain’s No 1 boxer on the world scene, but as a member of the world’s top 10 pound for pound fighters. He will come again after this.

Earlier, on the undercard, Sheffield welterweight Kell Brook stopped Luis Galarza in the fifth round on his Stateside debut.

For Froch, a weary journey back across the Atlantic, to rebuild. “It was a tough, bad night for me,” said Froch. “It’s a very unforgiving sport, it was very frustrating tonight.”

Ward wins unanimous decision over Froch

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Andre Ward staked his claim as the top 168-pound division fighter, using his speed and a combination of lefts to defeat Carl Froch in a unanimous decision Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in the Super Six super middleweight tournament final.

/AP - Andre Ward, right, connects with a right punch to the head of Carl Froch during the fifth round of the Super Six super middleweight tournament final on Saturday.

Ward, the Olympic gold medalist from Oakland, Calif., retained his WBA championship and won the WBC super middleweight belt in the final bout of the unique tournament that stretched out over two years.

“One of the strongest assets I have is my mind. I kept my composure, I kept things under control. And we pulled it off,” Ward said. “I hope I did a good job. But we can still get better, believe it or not.”

Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) dictated the pace from the opening round, connecting on a series of left hooks to rattle Froch. Froch, out of Nottingham, England, never came close to getting knocked out. Froch (28-2, 20 KOs) did not get going until late, though, finally showing some overdue aggression in the 10th.

“I wanted to put my shots together, but he moves around, and slips and slides. He's very good at that,” Froch said. “And that's why it was a bad night for me.”

Ward dominated the six-man, 168-pound tournament, backed by premium network Showtime. And he did so — on this night, at least — despite injuring his left hand in camp, and then again in the sixth round.

“Give credit to Andre. I never found myself in the zone where I could get my shots off and do what I wanted,” Froch said. “That's something I'm going to have to work on in the gym.”

One judge scored it 118-110 and two others had it 115-113 for Ward.

“We wanted to fight inside and outside, and we pulled it off,” Ward said. “I was actually surprised at how slow Froch was. He was as slow as he was on tape.”

Ward and Froch were slated to meet Oct. 29 before Ward was injured in training and the fight was rescheduled. Ward needed stitches for a cut above his right eye.

Ward still hasn't lost a bout since he was an amateur. He entered the Super Six tourney as an underdog to the more experienced Arthur Abraham, Froch and Mikkel Kessler.

He proved himself as the best of them all in Atlantic City.

Ward smothered Froch when they were close, then was elusive enough to keep his distance from Froch for most of the bout. Ward said he was surprised at how slow Froch was during the 12-round fight.

Ward landed 243 of 573 of his punches (42 percent) while Froch was a miserable 23 percent (156 of 683). Froch, who lost and regained his WBC belt during the inaugural tournament, averaged only 56 punches per round after averaging 69 in his previous four Super Six fights.

“I never found myself in the zone where I could get my shots off and do what I want. That's something I'm going to have to work on in the gym.”

Froch, 34, went 4-1 in the previous rounds of the tournament. He opened with a 12-round decision over Andre Dirrell on Oct. 17, 2009, then rebounded from the first loss of his career — a 12-round decision to Kessler on April, 24, 2010 — with decision victories over Abraham and Glen Johnson, respectively.

The tournament took a bit of a hit with various boxers dropping out because of injuries. Ward proved himself as one of the elite with wins over Kessler and Allan Green to reach the semifinals against Abraham, who advanced despite losing twice.

Ward dominated with the left hook in the first few rounds to set the tone for the rest of the lopsided bout and add the tournament trophy to go with his Olympic gold and unified belts.
