Guillermo Rigondeaux takes WBA crown
Rigondeaux knocks out Ramos with a body shot
LAS VEGAS -- Two-time Olympic champion Guillermo Rigondeaux stopped Rico Ramos at 1:29 of the sixth round to take the WBA super bantamweight title Friday night at The Palms in just his ninth professional fight, a record for fewest bouts en route to a major world title.
"I wanted to make history," Rigondeaux said. "I'm very happy and this is a historic moment."
The undefeated Cuban defector floored the overmatched Ramos with a straight right in the first round, had control throughout and ended it with a left hook to the body.
"I never thought it would be easy," Rigondeaux said. "Everyone at this level is tough."
In the sixth, Rigondeaux landed three consecutive straight right hands that backed Ramos up into a corner, then landed the devastating left hook to the body that sent Ramos to the canvas in visible pain.
"Every time I let my hands go, I hurt him," Rigondeaux said. "I knew he wasn't getting up from that shot."
Also, Joel Diaz Jr. overcame a second-round knockdown to stop Guy Robb at 2:20 in the seventh round of a super featherweight slugfest. Diaz knocked down Robb twice in the third round and forced the referee to stop the fight after landing multiple power shots in the seventh.
Earlier, Mathew Villanueva stopped Michael Ruiz Jr. in the seventh round in a super bantamweight fight.

Rigondeaux trilled fans at the Pearl Club in Palms Casino, Las Vegas and won the crown at 1:29 of the sixth stanza of the main e vent of the evening televised by Showtime. It was Guillermo's ninth professional fight.“Rico Ramos is a very good fighter,” said Rigondeaux. “But I train very hard and when I train, no one can beat me.2012 is going to be my time. I’ve got the greatest promoter of all time, Bob Arum. I just want them to open the doors for me.” The first name that came from the lips of newly crowned super bantamweight champion is Nonito Donaire. Donaire Rigondeaux was the first fight on my wish list for 2012.
Cautious first round ended with Rigondeaux depositing Ramos on the canvas with a powerfull left cross. The champion, not for long got up and the bell sounded. Like a panther , Cuban challenger attacked with precision, but he was not in a hurry , every move perfect. After two , champion, Rico Ramos had an uphill battle. Right jab, right hook, left cross, Rigondeaux was unloading as if a well rehearsed dance, and then he went to the body . The champion, Ramos wasn't throwing back, he looked afraid. It began to look alike a target practice for Regoundeaux in the fourth. The crowd booed, the champion still did nothing. The big problem for Rico Ramos as well as every other fighter who had to face two time Olympic gold medalist in the ring, was to hit Guillermo ; it was not an easy task. In the sixth after a clash of heads, Rigoundeax decided that he had seen enough. He went on the attack, landed some powerfull left hands and finished the job with monster body shot. Rico Ramos went down like a sack of potatoes and never got up. Referee Joe Cortez wwved off the contest at 2:20 of the sixth stanza. There is a new champion in super bantamweight division and his naem is Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Rico Ramos 122 vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux 120.5
Ramos: “A lot of people are doubting me for this fight but who cares? It’s me and him in that ring. I came to keep that title. I’m the WBA champ and I will stay the champ. It’s hard work to stay the champion. I put a lot of hard work and dedication into this. I’m still moving, man. I’ve got my son, he’s two, that keeps me motivated. I’ve got my fans, my friends, my family, it all keeps me motivated.”
Rigondeaux: “Of course I should be the betting favorite. What should I expect from Ramos? He has to worry what to expect from me! I’m very happy for the opportunity to win a title with less than 10 pro fights. I’m ready for the challenge.”
