Fonfara stops Mitchell in 3rd round at Pavilion
Chicago boxer easily wins vacant USBO light heavyweight title
Fonfara found home for his vaunted right cross early and he landed it often. He also found a home for his left later on, and landed so many punches that some defied description.
Mitchell hit the deck in the middle of the opening round after a right softened him up for a left. He spent much of the round wobbling, and was put down again at the end of the round.
His legs were shaking when he arose, but the bell had sounded so referee Celestino Ruiz motioned him back to his corner.
To open the second round, Fonfara was slightly winded, and Mitchell sought safety on the inside. But whenever Fonfara could open enough room between them, he hurt Mitchell again. Even though he remained upright for the round, Mitchell was unable to walk a straight line back to his corner.
Fonfara picked it up again in the third round, and battered Mitchell, hurting him with a right cross that left Mitchell helpless but still on his feet. His corner threw in the towel, but Fonfara landed a couple of more punches before it fluttered to the canvas across the ring and Ruiz saw it. Mitchell fell to the ring floor just as the towel landed at 1:03 of the round.
In the co-main event, Victor Polyakov won a much tamer 10-round decision over Derrick Findley to win the vacant USBO middleweight title. Neither fighter was able to dominate as they traded punches during the entire 10 rounds. It wasn't until the 10th round that they seemed to seriously go for the KO, but neither fighter was able to score a knockdown.
Judges' scores were 99-91 twice and 96-94.
Raeese Kaleem Aleem was much more polished than Dewayne Wisdom in their featherweight four-rounder to open the night, but Wisdom kept winging punches that he hoped would keep it close.
Unfortunately for him, none of the three judges thought it was close. They gave Aleem every round.
Welterweight Chad McKinney won his pro debut with a similarly one-sided four-round decision over Clifford McPherson.
McKinney started the fight fast, and switched constantly from the left-handed to right-handed stance and back again.
Although McKinney has not fought as a professional before, he was extremely popular with the fans, who cheered loudly when he was introduced, and again when the decision was announced.
Adan Ortiz won his pro debut with a first-round knockout of Ricky Lee Lacefield in a bantamweight bout. Lacefield, who has yet to win in four fights, was boxing well for 2:34, but then took a grazing punch to the stomach. A following right missed, but Lacefield retreated to Ortiz's corner and went to the canvas. Ten seconds later, he was counted out.
Paul Littleton mixed his attack to the head and the body in a solid first round against Guy Packer in a middleweight fight. It paid off in the second round when a solid right to the stomach sent Packer into the ropes. His foot went out from under him and off the edge of the ring apron as Littleton followed with a barrage. Although Packer beat the count, he seemed to have had enough and the referee waved the fight over.
After his last fight at the Pavilion, Littleton had been asked "You're 2-0. What's next?" He answered, "3-0," and now he is.
