Garcia wins vacant WBC title
Danny Garcia catches Erik Morales flash on his way to a unanimous decision victory over the future Hall of Famer on Saturday night
Morales, who had already lost the title at the weigh-in when he came in two pounds over the limit, lost the fight at the Reliant Arena in Houston to the slick counter-punching style of the younger man.
Garcia was able to counter with hard rights and hooks all night as Morales pressed the action with his jab, and it was one of those hooks that sent Morales to the canvas in the penultimate round.
Having barely survived the 11th Morales did not have much left for the final round and a disciplined Garcia saw out the fight to take it 118-109, 117-110, and 116-112 on the judges’ scorecards.
‘I won this fight with my conditioning,’ said Garcia, who was overcome with emotion. ‘If you have dreams, hold on to them. I'm proof that they come true.’
In the co-feature, light-middleweight contender James Kirkland defeated Carlos Molina by a controversial 10th-round disqualification after the Mexican’s cornerman briefly entered the ring following a knockdown.
Having struggled to pin Molina down for the majority of the night Kirkland was behind on two of the official scorecards in the 10th when he landed a big shot just before the bell that sent his opponent to the canvas.
Molina beat the count and headed for his corner when one of his cornermen briefly hopped in and out of the ring - presumably thinking the round was over - causing referee Jon Schorle to disqualify Molina.
‘I hate this decision,’ said Kirkland afterwards. ‘I was coming on strong. I wanted to win fair and square. I take nothing away from Molina. I'll give him a rematch.’
