Thompson won eliminatory bout against Linares
In a shocker, unheralded Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (21-2, 19 KOs) scored a second round TKO over former two-division world champion Jorge “Nino de Oro” Linares (31-3, 20 KOs) in a WBC lightweight title eliminator on Saturday night at the Grand Oasis Cancun in Cancun, Mexico. Thompson dropped Linares with a barrage of punches in round two and the bout was waved off due to a cut over Linares’ left eye. Time was 2:27. Thompson is now in line to face WBC champion Antonio DeMarco.
Ana Maria Torres retains WBC title
Ana Maria Torres (28-3-1, 16KOs) stopped Colombian fighter Maria Andrea Miranda (14-8) in the fourth round to retain her super flyweight championship of the World Boxing Council at the Auditorium Gym in Los Cabos, Mexico. After taking punishment for three rounds, Miranda sat on her stool when the fourth round started and she was counted out.
Kelly Pavlik KO´S Aron Jaco
Former middleweight king Kelly Pavlik (38-2, 33 KOs) returned to the ring to stop Aaron Jaco (15-3, 5 KOs) in two rounds. Pavlik dropped Jaco to a knee with a hard left in the first round, and then finished him off in the second with another hard left. The fight took place at a catch-weight of 170-pounds.
Charr defeats Bidenko and retains title
In the main event of the action packed fight night in at the Martim Hotel in Cologne, Germany, WBC International Silver heavyweight champion, Manuel Charr made another step towards recognition as a serious contender at the most prestigious weigh-class in the sport. In the first defense of his belt and his first fight as his own promoter, he showed poise and good boxing skills in defeating rugged and tough ex-contender Taras Bidenko by twelve round unanimous decision.
Lundy retains NABF title
Philadelphia native “Hammerin” Hank Lundy (22-1-1, 11 KOs) is still the NABF lightweight title holder after he defeated St. Louis’ Dannie Williams (21-2, 17 KOs) on Friday night at the MGM Grand Arena at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights.
