REPORTS:
‘Dragon’ Kuehne and Simcic Retain
Both women’s world champion Ramona Kuehne and
International champion Denis Simcic successfully came
through their respective first defences of their World
Boxing Federation crowns this past weekend (Dec. 3) in
Dresden, Germany.
‘The Wild Dragon’ Kuehne overcame undefeated
challenger Irma Balijagic Adler of Bosnia Herzegovina in a
solid rather than spectacular fashion, retaining her
women’s world super featherweight title for the first time
(the WBO and WIBF titles of the triple champion also being
on the line). Her trainer, and partner, Stefan Boestfleisch
had given Ramona a perfect gameplan and the fighter
followed through to near perfection.
Her defence being much improved, Ramona kept the fight
at a high pace and always landed the better punches to
come away with a unanimous verdict (twice 100:90 and
97:94). The 30-year-old Kuehne improved to 17-1 (5).
Denis Simcic, the Slovenian under contract to promoter
SES Boxing, also gave a near flawless performance at
light heavyweight in the inaugural defence of his
International title. Challenger Jindrich Velecky was
outboxed and outfoxed and quickly started to bleed from
the nose. The Czech puncher, in the rare moments he got
close to Simcic, could never really get through, as the
WBF champ also showed a solid defence and quick
moves.
The decision after 10 rounds was a near formality: Two
judges scored it a shutout at 100:90, while the third gave a
single round to Velecky at 99:91. Simcic’ record now
stands at an impressive 25-1 (14).
Lamare Powers To Victory
Womens light welterweight world champion Myriam
Lamare retained her WBF crown for the first time on
Saturday, Nov. 6, in Aix en Provence, France, proving
beyond a shadow of a doubt why she is recognized as one
of the top female fighters on the planet.
Tall German-Italian challenger Lucia Morelli, who came
with a respectable credentials and a 14-1 record, was
dominated by the stocky Lamare from the start, although
she never gave up despite not winning any round.
Sneaky right hands from Morelli kept reminding Lamare
that she had to work for victory, but the French star
ultimately overpowered Morelli in the sixth round to force
the stoppage of English referee Paul Thomas after 1:00
min. of the round. Morelli protested bitterly and shed tears
in the ring, but had shipped too many clean headshots and
was fighting on guts alone in the final seconds.
WBF champion Lamare had legendary Lucia Rijker, the
Dutch ex-fighter who was never beaten in the ring and
later became a successful actor, in her corner and Rijker
had trained Lamare for this title defence in the south of
France. The fight was televised live all over Europe by
Eurosport and promoted by Lamare’s own promotional
company Absolute Boxe. The 35-year-old champion is now
18-3 (10).
INSIDE:
Fratini Retires As Vice President
Italian Matteo Fratini today resigned from his position as
World Boxing Federation vice president, citing personal
reasons for his retirement.
The 56-year-old from Rome, who is a respected
international judge, served in this position for thirteen
months since October 2009. In view of his great merits, the
WBF directory acclaimed Fratini as Honorary Consultant
and WBF President Howard Goldberg stated: “While we
are sad that Matteo has stepped down, but at the same
time respect his decision, we want to honour him with this
non-executive post for his contribution and cooperation,
because we are happy that Matteo will remain available for
the World Boxing Federation with his experience and
advice.”
Fratini will also stay on the Executive Committee and keep
on accepting assignments as judge. The WBF directory
will immediately endeavour to appoint a new vice president
still this month.
