7 January 2011 - Cox Pavilion, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States Banner Promotions (Art Pelullo) - Star Boxing (Joe DeGuardia) Thompson Boxing Promotions (Ken Thompson) - German Titov Boxing Promotion Martinez edges Provodnikov in 12 On an entertaining ESPN Friday Night Fights season opener, Mauricio Herrera upset and out-pointed heavily favoured Siberia's Ruslan Provodnikov in a grueling twelve-round super-lightweight contest, handing him his first pro loss via a close decision victory. The bout left both men damaged around their eyes. Providnikov outlanded Herrera 326-300 according to Compubox but Herrera displayed tremendous heart and was favored on the scorecards by twice 116-112 (Richard Houck and Duane Ford) and 115-113 (Adalaide Byrd), perhaps due to a greater workrate from the outside. Referee was Russell Mora. It was a close fight that could have gone either way. Provodnikov entered the Las Vegas fight with a black eye from sparring and soon was cut on the side of the same eye, but after three rounds, the bulging mouse under Herrera's left eye was far worse than Provodnikov's optic. Sadly, Herrera's corner did not have an endswell to reduce the swelling and the eye was so bad swollen and bruised that the fight could have been stopped without much outcry. Even with only one eye, Herrera fought effectively. He didn't have the power to compete with Provdnikov's damaging blows, but he increasingly controlled the action as the rounds wore on. Herrera boxed well during the opening stages but, even though he was the silkier technician, he soon began to dent in the face of a much stronger opponent. Provodnikov hurt the American with a left hook in the third, but it was an accumulation of incessant and hurtful output that forced the closing of Herrera’s left eye by the fourth. Herrera, though, rebounded bravely to stave off the Russian and showed grit throughout the contest by scoring with tremendous combinations. By the twelfth, Herrera's face was simply a mess from Provodnikov's pressure, but he did enough to pull out a very close fight. The touted Provodnikov falls to 17-1-0 (11) while the gallant Herrera improves to 16-1-0 (7), with the only loss being a split decision to ex-junior lightweight titlist Mike Anchondo. Demetrius Andrade wins by decision over Alberto Herrera Rhode Island's Demetrius Andrade improved to a perfect (12-0-0, 8KO's) scoring a dominate eight round decision over tough as nails Alberto Herrera (7-2-1, 5KO's) at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, NV. The bout, promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing and Banner Promotions, kicked off ESPN's 2011 "Friday Night Fight" series. Andrade, the 2007 Amateur World Champion and 2008 U.S. Olympian showed why many consider him to be one the top prospect in all of boxing, as he used superior speed, power, and all around boxing ability to completely outclass an extremely game Herrera from the opening bell. Andrade landed a number of huge left hands behind a piston like jab that kept Herrera off balance all night long. Two judges scored the bout 80-72 for Andrade with the third scoring the bout 79-73 (Robert Hoyle, Jerry Roth and Tim Cheatham respectively). Referee was Joe Cortez. Andrade improved did not look as spectacular as his amateur pedigree would indicate. Andrade didn't even come close to knocking down an opponent who was knocked out in his last fight by Chris Chatman, whom Andrade already beat. Andrade, who is looking to have a huge breakout year in 2011, is scheduled to be back in action in February.
