Matchroom´s International heavyweight tournament May 7 in London is now joined by no other than German-based Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez, 50-2. That completes a lineup that already includes Mike Perez, Fres Oquendo, Kevin Johnson and Tye Fields. Gomez, a southpaw, turned pro with Universum back in 95 and was as a cruiser WBC champ and in a class of his own despite a well know wild lifestyle. In 2002 Gomez moved up to heavyweight and have since then blown hot and cold with erratic performances in and out of the ring. With Ahmet Oener and Arena Box Promotion Juan Carlos reched all the way to a fight against WBC king Vitali Klitschko but while Gomez could box the ears of the big Ukrainain he wasn´t strong enough to hold him off and was stopped. In June of last year Gomez returned to Universum and looked good last time out stopping Harold Sconiers in four. It shapes up as Gomez vs Perez in an all-Cuban matchup in the finals.
EBU jr middle champ Lukas Konecny, 46-3, defends the title against Frenchman Hussein Bayram, 34-3, May 21 at home in Usti, Czech Republic. The show is promoted by SES. Konecny have been named Fighter of the Year by the EBU. WBA standard middleweight champion Gennadyi Golokin´s defence against Kassim Ouma will now go ahead June 17 or 18 with site still Panama City. The fight was first set for early May. Bosnian cruiser Enad Licina returns to action May 7 in Neubrandenburg on the undercard to Sylvester vs Geale. Licina was last seen losing to IBF ruler Steve Cunningham. Licina takes on Michele De Meo. With Sauerland´s stronghold over the cruisers don´t be surprised if we see Enad in a major fight soon. EBU cruiser champ Alexander Frenkel will make the mandatory defence of the title against veteran Silvio Branco on a show promoted by OPI 2000. When and where is to be announced. Frenkel have been sidelined for some time with a hand injury. Professional boxing in Sweden have had a very slow 2011 but on May 28 Kamran Kabinejad stage a small show in Orebro and Pugnus Boxing Promotion returns September 3 with a show in either Karlstad or Gothenburg where Frida Wallberg could be defending her WBC female jr lightweight title against Canadian Olivia Gerula.
